Welcome Messages

You can get MEE6 or your Custom Bot to send a message when new users join your server. This is useful if you want to se nd a new user a list of rules, info about how to use the server, tips, or even just a warm welcome.

You can either send the welcome message in a Discord channel, or directly to the user through a direct message.

To set up join messages, head on over to your server dashboard > Server Management > Welcome

Location of the plugin

Send welcome messages to a Discord channel

To send a join message to a specific channel in your server, enable and configure the option «Send a message when a user joins the server» , and select a channel for the message to be sent to.

Setting the welcome message

After configuring the join message, the next time a user joins your server, MEE6 will give them a warm welcome in the channel you selected.

Make sure MEE6 has permissions to read messages and send messages in the channel settings for the welcome channel.

Send welcome messages directly to the user

To send a private join message to new users, enable and configure the option «Send a private message to new users» .

Setting the private welcome message
After configuring the private join message, the next time a user joins your server, they will be sent a message welcoming them to your server.

For users to successfully receive the Private Message, they will need to allow private messages for servers they join. They can enable this in User Settings > Privacy & Safety > «Allow direct messages from server members»

Send fancy welcome card when new members join your server

To be able to use all customization options for the welcome card, you will need MEE6 Premium
Enabling the «Send a welcome card when a user joins the server» option allows MEE6 to send a fancy welcome card when the new user joins the server. With MEE6 Premium you are able to edit the text that appears on the card, the font of the text, the color of the text, and even change the background color/upload your own custom image.

Recommended image size for welcome cards: 1280 x 581 px

Or any other 11:5 resolution.

You can crop images of different size directly during the upload.

Send stylish embeds instead of a plain boring text message

You can enable the «embed» option for both welcome messages (message to server and private message to user). This allows you to send nice-looking messages with titles, images and fields, instead of your usual text. See the example below (left is on Discord, right is on your server dashboard):

Welcome embed builder on the dashboard and the result

Advanced tip: Whether you’re sending the welcome message in a channel or through DM, you can use variables to make your join messages nicer and more informative. Make sure to check out the list of variables.

If you have any issues with the plugin, do not hesitate to join our support server ✌️

discord.py Project 2: Welcomer

In this article, you’re going to learn how to make a welcoming bot!

It will send a welcome message to a specified channel with the user’s avatar and name!

To start, we need to initialize our bot. For this walkthrough, we can use discord.Client instead of commands.Bot, because we aren’t going to have any commands.

Exit fullscreen mode

We next need to add our on_member_join event, and tell the bot to send an embed in the channel:

Exit fullscreen mode

Now run the code, grab an alt account or ask a friend to join the server, and boom!

But wait. It doesn’t work!
That’s because we need the members intent enabled!

After you’ve enabled the Privileged Intents in the dashboard, we need to enable them in the code!

A video explaining how to set up everything except adding the user to a role can be found here.

Update November 2019 — Now set up as a docker container to ensure full compatibility as I will not be maintaining this. Specific versions of Python and Discord.py are required for this script to work.

Update November 2020 — Added basic install instructions for home computers and generic Linux distros, and how to enable Intents. (by isigebengu-mikey)

Update August 2021 — The discord.py project is no longer under development. If you’re looking at this project and are interested in making your own Discord bots then take a look at MupBot — a Node.js discord bot implementation to get you started. This repo will never be updated again so is being put into read-only mode.

Enable Members Intent

Go to the Discord Developer Portal and select your bot. Now move to the bot tab and scroll down. There you should see Priveledged Gateway Intents . Enable the Members intent.

Secondly, we want to make sure we’ve updated our package list:

We now want to install the python3 package:

Our final thing to do is run the script:

You can download the latest python release from here. We now want to download and extract this repository: Downloading the repo Extracting the files After extracting, you can navigate into the folder and just double-click the file. Running the file

Advanced: How to install the welcome-bot as a docker container on a server (raspberrypi)

Building the image

Copy the folder containing the Dockerfile onto the server. Go to the directory that has the Dockerfile and run the following command to build the Docker image from the source code:

docker build -t welcome-bot .

The image will now be listed by Docker. You can confirm this by running:

Create a writeable container from the image

docker create —name welcome-bot welcome-bot

docker start welcome-bot

Set up a cronjob

Run the command below to edit the cronjobs:

Then add the below line to it:

*/10 * * * * docker stop welcome-bot && docker start welcome-bot

This will run the service every ten minutes. To change this use Crontab Guru

View logs from inside the container

Run the below command to see the output of the bot.

docker container logs -f welcome-bot

MAKE SURE THAT YOU CHANGE THE TOKEN AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FILE.
