Apple Cash guide: What it is, how it works, and what it costs

When iOS 11 landed in 2017, it came with Apple’s first major foray into financial transactions: Apple Cash. Similar to Venmo or Cash App, Apple Cash lets you instantly send money to another iOS user. You don’t even need a new app, as it’s built right into iMessage. Apple Cash was released as part of iOS 11.2.
It’s an incredibly easy way to send person-to-person money, but it does have a few caveats you’ll need to be aware of. Here’s what you need to know about setting up and using it.
Apple Cash requirements
For starters, both the money sender and receiver need to be running iOS 11.2 or later. According to Apple’s support page, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:
- A compatible device with iOS 11.2 or later.
- Two-factor authentication for your Apple ID.
- An eligible debit or prepaid card in Wallet, so you can send money.
- Be at least 18 years old.
We have a guide that will tell you everything you need to know about setting up Apple Pay. Once it’s all set up, you’ll be able to send money to friends right within Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch.
How to set up Apple Cash
Before you can send or receive money, you’ll need to set up the Apple Cash card. It’s essentially a special prepaid card with some financial services provided to Apple by Green Dot Bank.
First, you may need to head into the Settings menu and make sure Apple Cash is enabled. Go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay and look for the Apple Cash toggle at the top of the screen.

If you don’t see an Apple Pay Cash card in Wallet, make sure it’s enabled in Settings.
Then, head into the Wallet app, tap on the Apple Cash card, then tap on Set Up Apple Cash. You’ll have to agree to some terms and conditions, but that’s it.

Setting up Apple Cash is a breeze. Just hop into Wallet and tap on the card to get started.
This process will trigger automatically if someone sends you money before you get a chance to set it up.
How to send money with Apple Cash on iPhone or iPad
Sending money with Apple Cash is incredibly simple. It’s just an iMessage app.
1. Launch Messages and then start a new message, or open an existing one.
2. Tap the Apps button and then the Apple Pay button.
3. Press the + or – buttons to adjust the amount, or tap Show Keypad to enter an exact amount.
4. Tap Pay. If you want to add a message here, you can.
5. Tap the send button. You’ll get a summary screen that you’ll need to approve with either Touch ID or Face ID.
That’s all there is to it. The money will be sent immediately, and will be available on the recipient’s Apple Cash card.
Using Apple Cash with your Apple Watch
This is just as easy as it is on your iPhone.
1. Open Messages on your Apple Watch and either start a new message or open an existing one.
2. Scroll down past the message and tap on the Apple Pay button.
3. Turn the digital grown to adjust the dollar amount. If you need to be more exact, tap the dollar amount to show the decimal places, then tap the value after the decimal and rotate the digital crown to adjust.
4. Tap Pay. You’ll be prompted to double-click the side button to confirm.
How to ask for money
You can ask your friend to send you money, too. When they get the request, they can tap it, and the payment amount will be filled out automatically (they can adjust it if they want).
Just open Messages, go to a conversation, and tap the Apple Pay iMessage app like you would when sending money. Enter the amount, and instead of tapping Pay tap the Request button.
On Apple Watch, tap the Pay button at the bottom of a conversation, set the amount, and then swipe the big “Pay” button to the left to turn it into a “Request” button.
You can also use Siri with a phrase like, “Ask Jason for $15 for tacos.”
How to cancel payment
If you sent money to someone and they haven’t yet accepted it, you can cancel payment.
1. Go to Messages and tap on the payment, or find the payment in the Transaction History of your Apple Cash card in the Wallet app or Settings.
2. Tap the transaction and look for the status field. Tap Cancel Payment. If you don’t see that option, they’ve already accepted the payment.
It may take up to a day for the payment to show up back on your account.
After the first transaction, most users will have Apple Cash set to automatically accept payments (that’s the default), so you probably won’t have much opportunity to cancel. You could always try asking them to pay you back…
Using Siri
You can use Siri to both send and request money. Try saying “Send Jane $14 for tacos” or “Apple Pay Greg $12 for tacos.” Or to request money, maybe, “Ask Glenda for $18 for tacos.”
Maybe you should cut back on the tacos.
About that Apple Cash card…
When you receive money, it goes onto your Apple Cash card. That money is then used by default whenever you send anyone else money with Apple Cash. If you don’t have enough in there, you can pay the balance with a debit or prepaid card.
You can also use money on your Apple Cash card to pay for things using Apple Pay. Apps and in-app purchases, retail, online…it’s just another source of money to use within Apple Pay. Just tap on your payment card whenever an Apple Pay summary pops up on screen for you to confirm, or if you’re buying something at retail, switch to the Apple Cash card before tapping to the terminal.
The maximum balance you can have on the card is $20,000. You can only send or receive up to $3,000 per message, and $10,000 within a 7-day period.
How to add money to your Apple Pay Cash card or transfer it to your bank account
You can add money to your Apple Cash card, although you will automatically add any missing balance from a debit or prepaid card when paying someone. Just open the Apple Cash card in the Wallet app or the Wallet & Apple Pay settings menu. Then tap on the Info tab. Then tap Add Money. Enter the amount you’d like to add, tap Add, and confirm.
Taking money off your Apple Cash card is just a little more complicated. You’ll need to add a bank account.
1. In the Apple Cash card info (in Settings or the Wallet app), go to the Info tab. You’ll find it by tapping the (…) button in the upper right of the card in the Wallet app.
2. Tap Transfer to Bank.
3. The first time you do this, you’ll have to tap Add Bank Account and enter your bank’s routing number and your account number.
4. Enter an amount, tap Transfer, then confirm with Touch ID or Face ID.

If you want to transfer money from your Apple Pay Cash virtual card to your bank, you’ll need to enter an account number.
A bank transfer can take from 1 to 3 business days (excluding holidays). You have to transfer at least $1 (though you can transfer your entire balance if you have less), you can’t transfer more than $3,000 at a time, and you can’t transfer more than $20,000 in a 7-day period.
Is Apple Cash free?
Yes, Apple Cash is free. There used to be a 3% fee when adding money to it via credit card, but Apple stopped allowing credit cards to be used for this purpose back in 2019.
What is Apple Cash Family?
If you have Family Sharing set up, you can set up Apple Cash cards for your child accounts. They can use it to make purchases with Apple Pay and you can be notified when they do, you can limit who they send money to, and lock their account if necessary.
To get started, open the Settings app, tap on your Apple ID, and then Family Sharing. Select Apple Cash from the list of sharable features.

Apple Cash
Apple Wallet
Apple Cash
Apple Cash.
Apple Wallet
Apple Cash
Apple Cash.

Apple Pay.

If you’re an iPhone user, you might not realize that you already have access to Apple Cash. It’s a digital cash card that’s built into Apple devices and can be found in the default Wallet app.
The main function of Apple Cash is to make it easier for Apple device users to send money to one another, including sending money through the iMessage app. But Apple Cash is more than just a peer-to-peer (P2P) payment service — it can be used to shop online, in stores, or to make in-app purchases.
Apple Cash is a convenient way to transfer money between friends and family. Once it’s set up, a user can simply open the iMessage app and send money to a contact through their chat. It’s also useful for those who use Apple Pay, a separate service that allows Apple device users to make contactless payments with any linked card, including an Apple Cash card.
Here are some important things to know about setting up and using Apple Cash.
How Apple Cash works
Apple Cash is a digital cash card that’s stored in the Wallet app of Apple devices, and it can be used for making P2P payments, as well as purchases through Apple Pay. When you receive money from another Apple Cash user, that money appears in your Apple Cash balance. The balance can then be spent or transferred to a linked bank account or debit card.
Sending money to peers with Apple Cash can be done either directly from the digital Apple Cash card (in the Wallet app) or through the iMessage app. You can send or receive anywhere between $1 and $10,000 per message. The money shows up on the recipient’s Apple Cash card instantly, but it may take from one to three days for the balance to be transferred to a bank account. Instant transfers to a bank account are possible, but it comes with a 1.5 percent fee.
There’s also an option to set up Apple Cash Family for children who are under 18 years old. This option limits the amount a child can send to $2,000 per message. Those younger than 18 also cannot add money to their Apple Cash card from a bank account; rather, their balance only grows when they receive money from another Apple Cash user.
How to use Apple Cash
1. Set up Apple Cash with a compatible device
To set up Apple Cash, you’ll need three things:
- A compatible Apple device (iOS 11.2 or later for mobile devices, or watchOS 4.2 or later for watches).
- Two-factor authentication enabled for your Apple ID (this can be done in Settings).
- An eligible debit card to load funds onto the Apple Cash card.
In the Settings app, you can turn on Apple Cash in the Wallet and Apple Pay section. Tap on the Apple Cash card icon and follow the instructions on the screen. You’ll be asked to agree to the terms and conditions, after which your device will set up Apple Cash for you.
The Apple Cash card, once set up, can be found in your device’s Wallet app.
If you want to set up Apple Cash Family, you’ll first need to have Family Sharing turned on, which can be done in Settings. The family organizer can add children to Apple Cash in the Family Sharing section of Settings.
2. Add money to your card
You’ll need to have a debit card linked to your digital Wallet to add money to an Apple Cash card. You can add a debit card to Wallet in the same place where you set up Apple Cash — the Wallet and Apple Pay section of Settings.
Once a debit card is linked to your Wallet, open Wallet and tap on the Apple Cash card. Then, tap the More button (an icon with three dots). This will open a page where you can see your Apple Cash balance, add money and transfer funds to a bank account.
Tap Add Money and enter the amount you’d like to add (the minimum is $10). You’ll be asked to confirm which debit card you want to use to fund the Apple Cash balance, and then the money is added to the Apple Cash card.
3. Send a payment
There are two ways to send a payment to someone using Apple Cash: directly from your Wallet or in the iMessage app. Both the sender and recipient need Apple Cash to send or receive money.
To send money from Wallet, simply tap the Apple Cash card in Wallet and then tap Send. Type in the contact name or phone number of the recipient. Enter the amount you’d like to send (between $1 and $10,000), then review the payment and confirm it with Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode.
In iMessage, open the conversation with who you’d like to send money to, or start a new one. Tap on the app button, which appears next to the type bar, and then tap on the Apple Cash icon. You’ll be prompted to enter an amount (between $1 and $10,000). Once you’ve reviewed the amount, tap Send and confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode.
The first time money is sent to someone, the recipient will need to accept the payment within seven days for it to go through. After the first instance, payments are automatically accepted.
If you’re using Apple Cash to make a purchase either online or in a store, you’ll need to pay using Apple Pay.
4. Transfer your balance to a bank account
As you start to accumulate money on the Apple Cash card, you may want to move it to a debit card or a bank account. This can be done by going to the same place where you added funds to the card, by clicking the icon with three dots next to your digital card.
Enter an amount to be transferred, then tap Next. You’ll be asked whether you want to do an instant transfer (for a 1.5 percent fee) or a transfer in one to three business days for free. After making a selection, the screen will instruct you to set up a bank account if you don’t already have one set up. You’ll confirm the payment, and the transfer is initiated.
Instant transfers can only be made to an eligible debit card, not a bank account. Money is sent within 30 minutes when you select instant transfer.
Apple Cash alternatives to consider
- Zelle: If your bank is one of the nearly 10,000 institutions that offer Zelle, it might be a good idea to take advantage of the P2P payment service. Zelle can be accessed directly from your bank’s mobile app, and it allows you to send instant transfers at no extra cost.
- Venmo: Anyone can use Venmo, as long as they’ve downloaded the app. Unlike Apple Cash or Zelle, it’s a standalone P2P payment app. Venmo comes with a social element — users can follow each other and add fun emojis to their payments, although they can also keep their account activity private.
- PayPal: This P2P payment service is a good option if you want to send money internationally. It also offers a PayPal Debit card, which, like the Apple Cash card, can be used to make purchases online or in stores.
- Samsung Pay Cash: Samsung device users can use this option instead of Apple Cash. Similar to Apple Cash, it is a digital wallet that you can access from a Samsung mobile device. However, to take full advantage of Samsung Pay Cash, users will need to undergo an extra registration process to upgrade to a Full Card Account.
Bottom line
Apple Cash makes it easy for Apple device users to send money to each other. Users can simply tap the Apple Cash icon in their text messages to send money through iMessage. It can also be used as an extra repository for spending money and can be used for purchases anywhere Apple Pay is accepted.
With that said, only Apple device users can send and receive money using Apple Cash, so those looking for a more universal payment service may want to consider other P2P payment apps.
